Hot Buttered Fun
As a movie buff, the title Battlefield Earth means only one thing: a middling John Travolta science fiction film from the year 2000. Here in the summer of 2008, it has taken on an entirely new meaning on the wonderful new cable television channel, Planet Green. It is a reality show.
I used to follow contemporary music as much as I do modern cinema but have drifted toward movies a bit in recent years. Nevertheless, Heavy Metal and Rap are two types of music which I enjoy thoroughly. Really! Since Aerosmith and Run DMC created the first melding of the two styles in the mid-1980’s, I have enjoyed them in equal quantities.
Sadly, though, neither Heavy Metal nor Rap music is known for promoting environmental messages such as the importance of recycling and sustainability. Now, according to Eileen O’Neill, Planet Green has. Good for them!
Luda the Polluta vs. Toxic Tommy

Starting next week, Planet Green will air 10 episodes of Battlefield Earth, featuring a friendly rivalry between Heavy Metal god Tommy Lee and Rap success story Ludacris, culminating in a large concert in Los Angeles. This is the real deal! I have seen excerpts. Ludacris actually talks to the audience about protecting the earth and Tommy Lee reminds viewers of the importance of recycling and sustainability!
Lest unconvinced audiences be deterred by a message which focuses more on the environment than the music and the competition between the names Ludacris and Tommy Lee, the proportion will be heavy on the entertainment and faithful to environmental issues but far from a green sermon.
For my part, I couldn’t be happier! The Battlefield Earth competition is a splendid idea and I offer a personal standing ovation to Eileen O’Neill and her colleagues at Planet Green. In this age of global warming, the only way to win the hearts and minds of the masses is to bring the message to them in a way which is not only palatable but inviting. That’s what I strive to do with every thread and my heart is warmed by innovations such as Battlefield Earth on Planet Green.
